Hellion by Yen Tan
Says designer Yen Tan, "There's a metal guitar riff that runs through this short film. I wanted to convey that visually, combining it with the feeling of a very worn-out Black Sabbath tee." Kat Candler's short, "Hellion," debuted at Sundance in 2011, and this was the poster Yen Tan whipped up for it's premiere. The HELLION feature may well be debuting at Sundance 2014. Will Yen do that poster, too? We can only hope.
Yen Tan is a filmmaker and poster designer based in Austin, but hailing from Malaysia. Track him down at ottoistheone.com

Gladiator by Midnight Marauder
"With this poster I wanted to do something gigantic, god-like, and powerful," says designer Midnight Marauder. Drawing on mythological imagery, we see Maximus standing atop the severed head of Emperor Commodus. On a side note, remember when Joaquin Phoenix was some sort of conventional studio actor? So weird.
Midnight Marauder's Criterion Collection reconceptions first came to my attention via Instagram. Check out his work at midnight-marauder.com

Ida by Adrian Kolarczyk
When Adrian Kolarczyk started work on this poster for Frank Rinaldi's IDA, the film only existed on paper. "It was the first poster where I used my PC only for editing," says Kolarczyk. "Every part was done on paper with ink, crayons, and so on." Long live illustrated posters!

While Henry Sleeps by Adrian Kolarczyk
Adrian Kolarczyk kickstarted his career by designing, unprompted, a poster for Alex Ross Perry's feature IMOPLEX—which the designer saw at Off + Camera in Poland. Perry was so thrilled by Kolarczyk's work that he's been loaning him out to his filmmaker friends. WHILE HENRY SLEEPS director Craig Butta is one such filmmaker. You could rent Kolarczyk, too.
Yet another illustrated gem from Kolarczyk, who won the 2011 SXSW Poster Design Audience Award.

Earthling by Yen Tan
This poster for EARTHLING was one of Yen Tan's earliest ventures into key art design. Although there are a few things he says he'd do differently, now, this "remains a style that's very representative of a majority of my work." Graphical, with a focus on the human face, and generous negative space? We agree, and we like it.
On a side note, isn't it weird how just showing this woman in profile makes her look like an alien?

Prometheus by Midnight Marauder
Poster designer Jean Giraud, AKA Moebius, was an enormous influence on Midnight Marauder (they both have aliases, you might have noticed). Says MM, "I started working on this poster right after Moebius passed away, and I thought about him the entire time." The influence shows.
We deem this aesthetic "grit space," because it makes space look dirty in a way that makes your heart race.

Outside Industry by Yen Tan
OUTSIDE INDUSTRY tells the story of the evolution of SXSW. "When SXSW came about in the 80s," says Tan, "submission on cassettes was the norm. My intention was to come up with something that felt like it could've been designed back then." Success, Yen!
Yen Tan's film, PIT STOP, premiered at Sundance in 2013. But we fogot to ask him if he designed his own poster!
